Every Marketing Role Pays — this guide from Big Wave Digital covers every marketing role pays for the Australian technology market. A practical, current view.
Sydney’s digital marketing job market has moved into the back half of 2026 looking calmer than it feels from the inside. Wage growth nationally is steady rather than exciting, with the ABS Wage Price Index up 0.8 per cent in the March quarter 2026 and 3.3 per cent over the year, and private sector wages up 3.2 per cent. Average weekly ordinary time earnings for full-time adults sat at $2,051.10 in the most recent ABS release, an annual increase of 3.8 per cent, which annualises to roughly $106,700. Those two numbers frame everything below. If a marketing role in Sydney is not comfortably clearing that national average, it is either genuinely junior or it is underpaid.
This guide covers what every digital marketing role pays in Sydney as at August 2026, from coordinator through to chief marketing officer, plus contract and freelance day rates, bonus and equity structures, and how AI fluency is reshaping the bands. These are Big Wave Digital’s own market ranges. They are informed by ABS and Australian Government data, by the roles we actually recruit and place across the Sydney technology and digital sector, and by the offers we see accepted and declined. They are a snapshot as at August 2026, not a fixed rate card.
How to read these ranges – Every Marketing Role Pays
Every role below carries three reference points. LOW is where the band starts, typically a smaller business, a leaner budget, a first move into the title, or a candidate stepping up before they have fully grown into the scope. MARKET is the range where most genuine offers land in Sydney for someone who can do the job today without a long ramp. HIGH is the top of what we see paid, usually at a well funded scaleup, a large enterprise, a high margin category, or for a candidate with a specific and hard to replace capability.
All figures are annual base salary in Australian dollars plus superannuation, unless a role section says otherwise. Where we refer to total package we say so explicitly. Bonus, commission and equity sit on top and are covered in their own section further down, because in Sydney they now account for a meaningful share of what senior marketers actually earn.
Three things move a candidate between LOW and HIGH more reliably than years of experience. The first is budget and headcount ownership, because a marketer who is accountable for spend is priced differently to one who executes against someone else’s plan. The second is measurable commercial impact, expressed in pipeline, revenue, retention or cost per acquisition rather than impressions and engagement. The third is technical depth in a discipline that is currently scarce, which in the Sydney market of 2026 means analytics, lifecycle automation, paid media at scale, and applied AI.
Coordinator and specialist roles – Every Marketing Role Pays
Marketing Coordinator
LOW $64,000, MARKET $70,000 to $78,000, HIGH $85,000. This is the entry point to the profession and the level where pay varies most by actual scope rather than title. Coordinators who genuinely own a channel end to end, such as the email calendar or paid social reporting, sit well above those providing pure administrative support.
Marketing Executive
LOW $74,000, MARKET $78,000 to $88,000, HIGH $95,000. The title is used loosely across Sydney, so pay tracks real responsibility far more than seniority on paper. Executives who control a channel budget, however small, and who report on return rather than activity, reach the top of this band quickly.
Digital Marketing Specialist
LOW $82,000, MARKET $90,000 to $105,000, HIGH $115,000. Candidates who can run campaigns across paid, organic and email without supervision, and who bring current platform certifications alongside genuine working AI fluency, are crossing six figures noticeably faster than they were a year ago.
Performance Marketing Specialist
LOW $90,000, MARKET $100,000 to $118,000, HIGH $132,000. Performance roles continue to run hot and the market range moved up again this month. Employers are paying for demonstrable efficiency gains, which means candidates who can point to a specific reduction in cost per acquisition or a lift in return on ad spend, and explain the mechanism behind it, command the upper half of the band.
Paid Media and PPC Manager
LOW $95,000, MARKET $110,000 to $135,000, HIGH $150,000. The band is wide because the work is wide. A PPC manager running $40,000 a month for a single brand is a different hire to one running seven figures annually across markets and agencies. Budget scale, category competitiveness and whether the role includes creative strategy are the three things that decide where an offer lands.
SEO Specialist and SEO Lead
LOW $78,000, MARKET $88,000 to $105,000, HIGH $118,000. Specialists sit in the lower half and leads in the upper half, with the top of the band reserved for people who can operate technically as well as editorially. The interesting movement in 2026 is that SEO briefs increasingly include visibility inside AI generated answers and assistants, and candidates who can speak credibly to that, including structured data, entity clarity and citation worthiness, are being treated as scarcer than classic ranking specialists. The high end lifted slightly this month on that basis.
Content Marketing Manager
LOW $95,000, MARKET $105,000 to $124,000, HIGH $140,000. This is one of the few bands where we have softened our view this month. Volume content production is under genuine cost pressure from generative tooling, and briefs at the mid level are being written with smaller teams in mind. What has not softened is demand for content leaders who own strategy, subject matter depth and distribution, rather than output. The top of the band is intact and arguably strengthening for people who can prove content contributes to pipeline.
Social Media Manager
LOW $74,000, MARKET $84,000 to $100,000, HIGH $112,000. The band nudged up this month, driven by demand for managers who can produce as well as plan. Short form video capability, creator and influencer relationship management, and community building are what separate the top of this band from the middle. Social managers who can demonstrate commercial outcomes rather than follower growth are being paid closer to performance marketing levels, which was not true two years ago.
Email and Lifecycle Marketing Manager
LOW $93,000, MARKET $103,000 to $118,000, HIGH $135,000. Lifecycle remains one of the most reliably valued disciplines in Sydney because the return is easy to attribute. Managers who can build segmentation logic and journey architecture themselves, rather than briefing it to a technical team, sit at the upper end.
CRM Manager
LOW $103,000, MARKET $113,000 to $135,000, HIGH $150,000. CRM sits at the intersection of data, technology and commercial strategy, which is why the band is higher than most people expect. Managers who own the customer data model, not just the campaign calendar, are the ones at the top.
Marketing Automation Specialist
LOW $90,000, MARKET $100,000 to $118,000, HIGH $132,000. This band moved up this month and has been the steadiest riser in our data across 2026. As martech stacks get more complex and more expensive, businesses are paying for people who can make the platform actually work rather than people who can log into it. Specialists who can build integrations, manage data hygiene and design multi step programs without engineering support are increasingly hard to find in Sydney at any price.
Growth Marketer and Growth Lead
LOW $98,000, MARKET $115,000 to $135,000, HIGH $158,000. At its best the role owns a full funnel and an experimentation program with real budget. At its worst it is a performance marketing role with a more exciting title and no additional authority. Candidates who have run a structured testing cadence and can show a compounding result sit at the top of the band.
Product Marketing Manager
LOW $115,000, MARKET $135,000 to $155,000, HIGH $175,000. Product marketing remains one of the best paid individual contributor roles in Sydney marketing, particularly in software and technology businesses. Positioning, pricing input, competitive intelligence and sales enablement are the four capabilities that decide where an offer lands.
Brand Manager
LOW $98,000, MARKET $108,000 to $128,000, HIGH $145,000. Brand roles in Sydney vary enormously depending on whether the business treats brand as a cost centre or a growth driver. Managers with category management or profit and loss exposure, particularly in consumer goods and retail, sit at the upper end.
Management and leadership roles
Digital Marketing Manager
LOW $98,000, MARKET $115,000 to $135,000, HIGH $150,000. The most searched marketing title in Sydney and one of the most variable in practice. A digital marketing manager at a fifty person business is often a hands on generalist running every channel. The same title at a large organisation may manage a team of six and no channels directly. Team size, budget size and whether the role reports to a marketing leader or straight to a founder are the three variables that move the number.
Senior Marketing Manager
LOW $135,000, MARKET $145,000 to $165,000, HIGH $182,000. This band is the natural step before a head of function role and is usually where people management becomes the majority of the job. Senior managers who have hired, developed and retained a team, and who can present credibly to an executive group or a board, reach the top of the band.
eCommerce Manager
LOW $93,000, MARKET $105,000 to $130,000, HIGH $148,000. Ecommerce pay in Sydney tracks revenue responsibility more than anything else. Managers accountable for an online profit and loss, including merchandising, conversion rate and trading calendar, sit well above those managing a storefront operationally.
Marketing Analytics and Martech Manager
LOW $128,000, MARKET $142,000 to $170,000, HIGH $200,000. This is the band that has moved furthest in 2026 and it moved again this month. The scarcity is real. Businesses that have spent heavily on data infrastructure now need people who can turn it into decisions, and the candidate pool that combines marketing judgement with genuine data engineering literacy is small. Anyone comfortable across a modern warehouse, an event tracking layer and attribution modelling can effectively name a number in Sydney right now.
Head of Digital
LOW $165,000, MARKET $185,000 to $225,000, HIGH $255,000. Head of digital roles typically carry ownership of digital channels, digital product surfaces and often the website itself. The upper end applies where the role owns a substantial revenue line rather than a marketing budget.
Head of Growth
LOW $175,000, MARKET $195,000 to $235,000, HIGH $265,000. The best paid head of function role in the Sydney marketing market, and the one most likely to include equity. Scaleups pay at the top of this band for leaders who have taken a business through a specific revenue transition and can describe the mechanics rather than the narrative. Expect a larger variable component here than in most marketing leadership roles.
Head of Marketing
LOW $145,000, MARKET $175,000 to $205,000, HIGH $235,000. The band is broad because the title covers everything from the sole senior marketer in a growing business to the leader of a fifteen person function. The single biggest determinant is whether the role is accountable for a revenue target or a marketing budget. Heads of marketing carrying a number sit toward the top.
Marketing Director
LOW $205,000, MARKET $225,000 to $265,000, HIGH $305,000. Director level roles in Sydney generally require full function ownership, executive team membership and board exposure. Package structure matters more than base at this level, and total earnings frequently sit twenty to thirty five per cent above base once bonus is included.
Chief Marketing Officer
LOW $255,000, MARKET $285,000 to $355,000, HIGH $410,000. CMO compensation in Sydney varies more than any other marketing role, and base salary is the least useful part of the picture. At the top end, particularly in venture backed businesses, equity can be worth more than several years of base. In listed and large private companies, short and long term incentive plans do similar work. Anyone evaluating a CMO offer should be modelling total expected earnings across three years, not comparing base figures.
Contract and freelance day rates
Sydney’s contract market has been busier than its permanent market for most of 2026, largely because businesses want senior capability without adding permanent headcount while they wait to see where interest rates settle. The Reserve Bank held the cash rate at 4.35 per cent in June 2026 after three increases earlier in the year, and that hold has done more for hiring confidence than any single data release, but boards are still cautious about fixed cost.
Day rates below are indicative and quoted excluding GST for contractors invoicing through their own entity. Marketing coordinators and executives contract at roughly $350 to $500 a day. Specialists across paid media, SEO, email and content sit at $550 to $800. Senior specialists in performance, lifecycle and analytics command $750 to $1,100, with the top end applying where the engagement requires immediate autonomy. Marketing managers and senior managers contract at $800 to $1,200. Head of function and fractional leadership engagements run from $1,200 to $2,000 a day, and fractional CMO work in Sydney is regularly transacting between $1,800 and $2,800 a day for two or three days a week.
Two patterns are worth noting. Analytics and martech contractors are the hardest category to fill and are quoting above these ranges without much resistance. Content and generalist digital contractors are facing more rate pressure than they were a year ago, for the same reasons affecting permanent content bands.
Bonuses, commissions and equity
Base salary is an increasingly incomplete way to compare Sydney marketing offers, particularly above about $130,000. Variable pay is now a standard part of the structure at manager level and above, and the way it is designed says a great deal about how a business actually thinks about marketing.
Performance bonuses at specialist and manager level in Sydney typically run at five to fifteen per cent of base, paid annually and usually split between company performance and individual objectives. At head of function level, ten to twenty five per cent is the common range. At director and chief marketing officer level, twenty to forty per cent is normal, and in high growth businesses it can be higher again. The important question is not the headline percentage but the gate. A twenty per cent bonus that only pays if the whole company exceeds a stretch revenue target is worth considerably less than a fifteen per cent bonus with a sixty per cent individual component.
Commission adjacent structures are appearing more often in Sydney marketing roles, particularly in business to business technology, where demand generation and growth leaders are being tied to pipeline or qualified opportunity targets rather than revenue directly. These can be lucrative and they can also be unfair, depending on whether the marketer has any real influence over conversion once a lead is passed to sales. Anyone offered a pipeline linked structure should ask what happens to their earnings if sales headcount is cut or the sales cycle lengthens, because both happen and neither is within a marketer’s control.
Equity has become a genuine part of senior marketing compensation in the Sydney scaleup market rather than a rounding error. Growth leaders, heads of marketing and chief marketing officers in venture backed businesses are routinely offered options or rights alongside a base that may sit below what a comparable enterprise role would pay in cash. That trade can be excellent or it can be worthless, and the difference comes down to detail that is rarely volunteered.
The questions worth asking are consistent. What is the strike price and what was the most recent valuation. What percentage of the fully diluted company does the grant represent, not just how many options it is. What is the vesting schedule and the cliff. What happens to vested options if the person leaves, and specifically how long the exercise window is after departure. Whether the grant sits under an employee share scheme with the tax deferral concessions available under Australian law, because the tax outcome can change the value materially. And what liquidation preferences sit above ordinary shareholders, because in many outcomes preference stacks absorb most of the proceeds before employees see anything. A candidate who asks these questions is not being difficult. A business that will not answer them is telling you something useful.
How AI fluency is moving pay
The most consistent thing we have seen across Sydney marketing hiring in 2026 is that AI capability has stopped being a differentiator in interviews and started being an assumption. That shift has had two opposite effects on pay, and they are showing up in different parts of the same market.
At the production end, generative tooling has compressed the value of volume output. Roles built primarily on producing assets at scale, particularly in content and to a lesser degree in design adjacent marketing, are facing genuine downward pressure. This is why we softened the content marketing manager band this month. It is not that content matters less. It is that the specific task of producing a lot of competent copy is no longer scarce.
At the judgement end, the effect is the reverse and it is stronger. Marketers who can design an AI enabled workflow, evaluate whether its output is actually good, build guardrails around brand and accuracy, and integrate it into a martech stack without creating a data mess, are being paid clear premiums. In our experience that premium sits at roughly five to fifteen per cent above the equivalent band, and it is largest in lifecycle, analytics and martech roles where the work is systems design rather than asset creation.
There is a third effect worth naming. Search behaviour is changing, and SEO and content leaders are increasingly being briefed on visibility inside AI assistants and generated answers, not just traditional rankings. Very few people in the Sydney market can speak to that credibly with evidence rather than opinion. Those who can are commanding attention well beyond their years of experience, and we expect that to keep pushing the top of the SEO and content leadership bands through the rest of 2026.
What changed this month
Compared with our July 2026 update, the movements this month are modest and deliberate, consistent with national wage growth of 3.3 per cent annually rather than any sudden shift.
Junior bands lifted at the floor. Marketing coordinator moved from a low of $62,000 to $64,000 and marketing executive from $72,000 to $74,000, reflecting flow through from the Fair Work Commission decision that increased minimum award wages by 4.75 per cent and the National Minimum Wage to $1,004.90 per week from 1 July 2026.
Marketing analytics and martech moved again, from a market range of $140,000 to $165,000 up to $142,000 to $170,000, with the high end lifting from $195,000 to $200,000. This band has now moved in three consecutive updates and remains the tightest candidate market we are working in. Marketing automation specialist moved similarly, from $98,000 to $115,000 up to $100,000 to $118,000, with the high end from $125,000 to $132,000.
Performance marketing specialist edged up from $98,000 to $115,000 into $100,000 to $118,000, and social media manager from $84,000 to $100,000 at market, reflecting demand for managers who can produce short form video as well as plan campaigns. SEO and growth bands each firmed slightly at the top rather than through the middle.
Content marketing manager is the one band we have moved down. The market range came back from $108,000 to $125,000 into $105,000 to $124,000, with the low end lifting to $95,000 as the band narrows. Strategic content leadership is holding its value. Volume content production is not.
Everything else is unchanged from July, which is itself worth saying. Most Sydney marketing salaries did not move this month, and any guide that reports movement everywhere every month is not reporting a market.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest paid marketing role in Sydney?
Chief marketing officer is the highest paid marketing title in Sydney, with base salaries between roughly $255,000 and $410,000 and total earnings that can go considerably higher once bonus and equity are included. Below CMO, marketing director and head of growth are the next best paid, with head of growth often carrying the largest variable component in scaleup businesses.
What does a digital marketing manager earn in Sydney?
A digital marketing manager in Sydney typically earns between $115,000 and $135,000 base plus superannuation, with the full band running from about $98,000 at the low end to $150,000 at the high end. The variation is driven mainly by team size, budget responsibility and whether the role reports into a marketing leader or directly to a founder or chief executive.
How much do performance marketers get paid in Sydney?
Performance marketing specialists in Sydney sit at roughly $100,000 to $118,000 at market, with a low of about $90,000 and a high around $132,000. Paid media and PPC managers run higher, at $110,000 to $135,000 at market with a high of $150,000. Candidates who can evidence a specific improvement in cost per acquisition or return on ad spend, and explain how they achieved it, consistently land in the upper half of these bands.
What are freelance digital marketing day rates in Sydney?
Freelance and contract day rates in Sydney generally run from $350 to $500 for coordinator level work, $550 to $800 for specialists, $750 to $1,100 for senior specialists in performance, lifecycle and analytics, $800 to $1,200 for managers, and $1,200 to $2,000 for head of function engagements. Fractional chief marketing officer work is transacting between $1,800 and $2,800 a day. These figures exclude GST.
Do Sydney marketing roles include bonuses and equity?
Bonuses are standard from manager level up, typically five to fifteen per cent of base at specialist and manager level, ten to twenty five per cent at head of function level, and twenty to forty per cent at director and chief marketing officer level. Equity is now common in senior marketing roles at venture backed Sydney scaleups, usually as options or rights, and should be evaluated on strike price, percentage of fully diluted shares, vesting, exercise window after departure and liquidation preferences.
How should I negotiate a marketing salary in Sydney?
Negotiate on evidence rather than tenure. Bring two or three specific commercial outcomes you were accountable for, with the numbers attached, and be clear about which parts of the role you can do from day one versus what you would need to grow into. Ask for the whole structure before discussing base, including bonus mechanics and gates, superannuation treatment and any equity detail, because those elements are often more negotiable than base and can be worth more.
