About digital marketing

Does digital marketing still earn its place in a business budget? Big Wave Digital works with Australian marketing and technology teams every week, and the short answer is yes, provided you hire people who can read the data and act on it. Here is the case, and what it means for who you hire.

I was stunned last week to hear that a financial services firm don’t believe in Marketing?? What? Why?? I asked…
The Business Director believed that if you have to “Market” you’re obviously not busy, don’t have a loyal customer base and/or repeat business and therefore, you shouldn’t be in business at all. His archaic view was that word of mouth is the only way to grow your brand.
I disagree with his opinion and I wonder how many of you feel the same or agree with this view.?!
Some businesses may see marketing as an “expense”, If that’s the case, perhaps those business lack vision, or aren’t looking at the longer-term business forecast and strategy, or perhaps just don’t understand the ROI of that “expense”. Or maybe they don’t have the right technology in the business to investigate the appropriate data channels or perhaps just don’t understand the insights garnered from those channels… As the old saying goes, “you have to spend money to make money”
Having been a digital marketing recruiter for over 25 years, I see enormous benefit to marketing, especially when done right. I’ve seen businesses grow their customer base, increase market share, elevate their brand, win industry awards, increase business performance and beat their competition. The success of course; comes from hiring the right marketers to dive deep into your business data, build a comprehensive strategy and accurately execute the plan. (yes, there is a lot more to the marketing process, but this is just top level for the sake of this article)
There are many facets to marketing and combining traditional marketing techniques in this digital first world still goes a long way. I agree, that new business coming from “word of mouth” is great and certainly a testament to the quality work and service provided, but it can only take you so far.
I’d love your comments on this.
How have you seen marketing benefit your business?
What digital channels seem to work best for you?
Or, if you don’t think marketing works… what do you do to get your message out to the world?
